The ZuluSky Experience

A very loosely written page but probably the most important as regards ZuluSky, and why it is we do what we do, and what we have to offer you in a ‘meaningful’ African travel experience.

My love and passion for Africa has been with me for as long as I can remember. My grandparents in (sur)names of Wright, Mackenzie, McKeown, and Edwards each represent one of the ‘Home Nations’ in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. As such there is it might be argued very little African in me. But I was born here, in South Africa, as was my father, and my mother in Zimbabwe. Southern Africa is home, and it is what I know best.

And in a life of growing, learning, living and travelling through an Africa of such beauty and simple pleasures, a land of warm, generous people, where the wilds whisper so soothingly in the dead of night, you realise its harsh realities too. Make no mistake poverty, poor basic education, and lack of infrastructure mean Sub-Saharan Africa can never compete with the efficiencies of countries such as the United States of America, Germany, Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Education is the key to helping the continent to its feet, but it is in understanding her shortfalls that you will take with you an honest, unforgettable memory.

The above comment is best qualified in the words of German-born artist and author Vic Guhrs, in his novel ‘The Trouble with Africa, Stories from a Safari Camp’ (published 2004):

The trouble with Africa is that once it is in your blood, like malaria, it is almost impossible to get rid of. And the trouble with Africa is also the trouble with those of us who settle here: as long as we insist on judging it from a Western perspective, we will be the outsiders – we will be forever baffled by it. The complexities of African attitudes that seem to confound us are perhaps not so complex after all; it is their very simplicity that we fail to understand. On the road to our civilised enlightenment have we lost the ability to see life in its fundamental essence? [sic]

Really, above all in travelling across Southern and East Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands flights can be delayed, Border posts and entry / exit can take time; (travel) plans will not always go according to plan. Try not to fight it, understand it, and simply let yourself go. We will help you route a superb journey of discovery, and that is all that matters, an honest African experience that in all its rawness is its true splendour!
