Conservation

Whilst many parts of the developed world have managed to put in place suitable conservation structures to protect their natural heritage, this is an area that is problematic in so far as Africa is concerned.

One of the richest continents in terms of its natural resources, Africa is also one of the poorest economically. For many people subsistence farming is their only means to survive, and with ever increasing human populations this has disastrous consequences for the environment. Other factors threatening the long term future of Africa’s natural heritage is the inability to control poaching, both on land and at sea, as well as today’s unrelenting push by big business to target and exploit naturally pristine areas. Without the required resources to put in place frameworks that are able to look after both people and the environment, effectively monitor poaching and police industry, Africa’s huge natural wealth is at great risk.

With the above in mind there are many individuals and organisations doing their utmost to help fight for and preserve Africa’s natural heritage for future generations. It involves empowering rural communities, helping to educate, creating awareness, and raising funds. We too are trying to play our part through strong support of the Wilderness Leadership School / www.wildernesstrails.org.za and The Wilderness Golf Challenge.

The Wilderness Golf Challenge 2011 took place on March 11 2011 and was a great success, embraced by the ‘Greater’ Durban (business) community. We look forward to 2012’s event and for more information this please contact Simon at simon@zulu-sky.com.
