Description
A delightful Cape Town, ‘Garden Route’ and Eastern Cape itinerary.
The ‘Cape Town and Winelands’ region is considered one of the most breath taking destinations in South Africa, if not the world. It comprises of one of the world’s great port cities, Cape Town, affectionately known as the ‘Mother City’ - under the perennial guard of the sentinel of the Southern tip of Africa in Table Mountain towering behind - combined with the magical Cape winelands, encompassing the historical and scenic towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek (“the French Corner”).
In season (June through to November) the small town of Hermanus offers the opportunity to spot a pod of Southern Right Whale frolicking in the surf, whilst those interested in swimming with the ‘Keeper of the Deep’, the Great White Shark, can head off to Gansbaai for this thrilling experience. Alternatively, travel on the panoramic ‘Route 62’ through the Klein Karoo and character towns such as Montagu, the Ostrich farming district of Oudtshoorn, past the famous Cango Caves en route to George.
Passing through the scenic landscape of Wilderness, a charming world of lakes, rivers, fens, estuaries and beaches gently unfolding against a backdrop of lush forest and lofty mountains, the ‘Garden Route’ takes you to the beautiful coastal towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, with attractions including the Knysna Heads and the dark blue waters of the Knysna lagoon, and the long stretches of white-sanded, windswept beaches found in this part of South Africa.
A fitting climax to this itinerary sees a luxurious safari enjoyed at one of three of South Africa’s top game reserves, located in the Eastern Cape; ‘Big 5’ game viewing in a beautiful corner of Africa.
Extra
The itinerary takes in many destinations, and a substantial amount of travel. Being on the road is part of the experience, with drives through scenery that is simply fantastic. The late Autumn and Winter months of mid-May through to late August should be avoided, with frontal weather systems extremely prevalent over the Western Cape at this time of year. This is an itinerary that may be done as either a package experience or a self-drive itinerary. Children under the age of 12 years will need to be on a private safari vehicle with regards the bush experience.
